Repeaters are all privately owned and typically on the highest locations around, giving them long ranges. Most are open for all to use. Some (mostly UHF) are only open to the repeater's club members. They use VHF FM and UHF FM frequencies but you will also see them in the 6 meter FM (54MHz) band and the 10m FM (29.600 MHz) area. Repeaters are used locally but often linked to other repeaters in the area or to the internet allowing you to talk around the county, the state, across the country, or even world. Special codes are required that are often described on the repeater lists or owners website.
You have different modes of operation; analog (voice) or more recently digital (voice, data, photos, station control, more). Digital will typically be one of the modes below. The first three are the most common.
