ROARS (bi-weekly) Net
ROARS hosts a bi-weekly net on local VHF repeaters and simplex (and sometimes HF and UHF) to chat, welcome new hams, and practice net procedures if there was ever an emergency. We rotate Net Control and Net Control Backup responsibilities to give all ROARS members the experience of bringing a net alive and managing the traffic flow. This gets messy and challenging in an emergency, so practicing and following our standard script is essential for ALL participants!
WHEN: The 1st, 3rd and 5th (if there is a 5th) Wednesday of each month
TIME: 7 PM Pacific. All hams are welcome!
WHERE:
Under normal conditions, nets will begin on the PARC 147.130 repeater (+ offset, 107.2 PL) located at 5,600 ft on Mount Palomar.
For an emergency net, we will begin on the ROARS 145.300 repeater (- offset, 88.5 PL) located at 1,400 ft in the Ramona valley.
If the ROARS repeater is down or swamped, use 145.710 simplex (no PL)
ROARS nets normally use all three of the above frequencies in sequence. Each step is a little more challenging, so stay with us as long as you can.
Net Control and Net Control backup assignments are listed below. If you can fill any gaps, please email John (W6IET) at JGerman@pacbell.net, or let us know during a net, or at a club meeting. Thank you in advance!
Following the assignment list is the new ROARS login sheet that Net Control and Net Control Backup will use. All ROARS members and recent guests are listed.
Finally, all nets follow the ROARS Net Script available at the bottom of this page. All ROARS members should download it and print a hardcopy so they can run or follow a net even if computers are down.
Hope to see you on the air!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following is the Net Control Signup Sheet Used to staff the net.
Each net MUST have a Net Control operator to manage the net using the script at the bottom on the page.
There SHOULD also be a backup Net Control operator to assist with logins and take over the net if Net Control is unable to for any reason. A backup is also essential in a real emergency because the net traffic and external traffic can become more than one person can handle.
Net Control - Brings the ROARS net alive, takes role, and manages traffic flow at 7 PM the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesdays of the month. The check-ins are logged on a spreadsheet which follows here.
Give the Net Manager notice as early as possible if you can’t act as NC on their assigned nights.
Backup - Monitors the net traffic and records check-ins for Net Control might miss, and takes over NC if the assigned NC can’t take the net.
Give the Net Manager plenty of notice if you can’t act as NC backup on their assigned nights.
EVERY ROARS MEMBER should have the experience of being a NC or Backup NC! There is no time to learn during a real emergency.
Thanks for helping with the ROARS net!

John German, W6IET
